In this episode, I am talking about …I don’t even know how to describe it. Just listen to it for yourself. It is a very short and amusing story.

Hello and welcome to my podcast My Life and Other Funny Stories. My name is Dagmar Tomášková, I am an English tutor and coach and I created this podcast for English students who want to get better in their oral comprehension. As always you can find the transcription of this episode and vocabulary list in the notes of the podcast.

In this episode, I will tell you another short story that happened to me many years ago. I completely forgot about it but then one night, when I was falling asleep, it came back to my memory and woke me up again because it is one of the things that happen only to me and to no one else. I hope you’ll laugh.

I was in high school. Not only it was my last year in that school, it was my last week. Yes, that is right, it was maturita week. As some of you might know, before you go to actually do the exam, the first day of the week, there is like an introduction, an opening of the maturita exam week. It is a day when everyone comes in formal clothing and listens to the headmaster for like 15 minutes and then goes home to try to get in the head the last pieces of information and panic.

That day, I was wearing my flower-print dress with really cute white high heels. I am not a person who wears dresses and I am certainly not a person who wears high heels frequently. Maybe I should because I am the smallest person in the world but that is beside the point. Well, I was walking with my friend from the supermarket to school, just walking past the local culture center, we were talking, feeling a little bit nervous when suddenly, I lifted my leg but I couldn’t make a step. I almost fell down.

“What is that? Why can’t I walk? What happened?” I was asking myself. I looked down and found out that one of the pointy heels of my shoe got stuck in a drain. I don’t really know how to describe it but a drain is the thing in a sidewalk that helps when it rains because the water goes into it and it is not on the street anymore. It wasn’t like a normal drain, it was very long and with very thin spaces. I will try to find a picture and put it into the link of this episode, so you can find it there.

Anyway, my high heel was stuck in there. I tried to get it out by pulling my leg, but I only managed to move the whole drain. And I didn’t want to walk with a drain on my shoe to the opening of maturita week, if you know what I mean. My friend was, of course, laughing her ass off next to me but as the minutes went by and I was trying to get the heel out of it, I got really annoyed. I took off the shoe and with my pretty flower dress, I sat down on the pavement and was trying to force the shoe out of the drain. By that point, it was the time when everyone came to school, so a lot of buses were going by and I kid you not, everyone in all of those buses was watching me trying to get my heal out of the drain. It was so embarrassing

But it was pointless. Nothing helped, I said to my friend that she should go and leave me there because I was not about to walk with one shoe to school. But suddenly, a man shouted at us. I was confused but I looked around and there, on the balcony of the culture center building was a man shouting: “Do you need help?”. I was so desperate so I said – yes, please. He came down with some tools and finally got the heel out of the drain. I was so happy.

When I came to school, a lot of people asked me why I was sitting on the sidewalk in my dress with one shoe but I just laughed and said that I just wanted to.

Things like this happen to me all the time, I should really get used to it.

Thank you so much for listening to this episode and don’t forget that you can find the transcription and vocabulary list in the notes. Please give it a five-star rating if you liked it and I will see you next time, bye-bye.
